The Importance of Search Engine Optimization

These days, if a business does not have an online presence, they could be missing out on the ability to reach millions of potential customers.  However, just having a website, Facebook™ page, blog, Twitter™ page, and LinkedIn™ profile (to name just a few), are not enough.  These are living platforms that need to be updated regularly with new content, posts, and updates, but that is not all, Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, must be used and also updated regularly.

SEO is practically a science, with entire websites dedicated to helping you find the perfect keywords to use, which in turn, helps to drive traffic to your site.  There are many paid services, and is a worthwhile investment if you can afford it, but there are also free keyword optimization tools, such as Google™ Adwords.  With Google™ Adwords you can enter in a word or phrase, your website, and the category of your website, which will then pull up a list of high ranking keywords that can then be used on your website.
The purpose of using SEO is to help your potential customers find your site, which could also help your website place higher in the search results.  The key is to use keywords that you think will be used by your potential customers.  The keywords you choose should be somewhat unique, but try to avoid obvious keywords that everyone uses. That being said, keywords should also not be so obscure as to render them useless.  If no one uses the keywords you’ve picked, they will have a harder time finding your site.

SEO can be confusing and daunting, but it is a necessary evil if you want to compete in a global marketplace.  Use the Internet, books, and workshops to learn all you can about it because it is almost as important as advertising.
